Proper Retainer Usage and Care

  • Your retainers can affect your final orthodontic result, so follow through with the hard work you put in so far!
  • Wear your retainer at all times, or as instructed by your Dr. Patel.
  • Take your retainer out when eating, and when it is not in your mouth, it should be kept safely and securely in its case. Most dental appliances are lost in school cafeterias and restaurants!
  • Since we are at the beach, we advise you to remove your retainer when swimming or in the ocean.
  • Keep your retainer away from pets; dogs especially love to chew on them. Remember, the safest place to store your retainer is in its case when it’s not in your mouth.
  • Retainers can be damaged by certain elements. Keep them away from direct sunlight, hot car dashboards, hot or boiling water, washing machines and napkins.
  • Thoroughly brush your retainer daily with a toothbrush and toothpaste using lukewarm water. To keep them clean and remove the plaque, use Efferdent or other brands of orthodontic cleaners.
  • If you are wearing retainers for the first time, you may find speaking challenging. To get used to the retainers faster, practice talking out loud or singing with them.
  • If you break or lose your retainer, or need it adjusted, please contact our office immediately.
  • Finally, please bring all retainers with you to your appointment.
